Accoya® wood, stable, durable, sustainable and versatile

Accoya® ultra-high performance sustainable wood has properties that match or exceed those of the best tropical hardwoods and treated woods, but is produced using wood from sustainable sources.

Made by Accsys at its plant in Arnhem, the Netherlands, fast-growing sustainable wood undergoes a process called acetylation to create Accoya® wood, a rot-resistant timber that is both durable and structurally rigid.

Developed following decades of research and using cutting edge patented technology this proven wood modification technique creates a high performance wood, ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications.

Prowood Joinery, based in Sheffield, England are Accoya® Approved Manufacturers and use this flexible and hard wearing modified wood to manufacture all types of joinery products from windows and doors, to decking and cladding, bridges and boats.

Accoya® also has excellent sustainability credentials which exceed those of man-made, resource depleting and heavily carbon-polluting alternatives.

Accoya Approved Manuafcturer

The world’s leading high technology modified wood.

Accoya® wood is ideal for the manufacture of real wood windows, doors, staircases, mouldings, kitchens, furniture, conservatories, orangeries, garden rooms and pool houses. Not only does Accoya® have extremely low thermal conductivity but it equals or betters the durability and dimensional stability of the best hardwoods. It can be opaque coated or translucent coated for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood. Accoya®’s low maintenance requirements make it a cost effective and environmentally friendly material.

The Acetylation process

Is acetylated wood, pickled wood? If you treat or modify a softwood by subjecting it to vinegar, it turns into a hardwood by preventing the cells in the wood from being able to absorb water.

The chemistry behind the acetylation process used to create Accoya® is a little more complex, and the vinegar is actually acetic anhydride but the principle is very similar.

Accoya® wood is modified right through to its core during the acetylation process improving the timber's hardness for better durability and stability.

Coatings and finishes

Accoya® can be coated in the same way as any other wood, using transparent, translucent or opaque coatings. Impregnating oils and other finishes can also be used. Accoya®’s exceptional dimensional stability, reduces swelling stress on coatings, and UV resistance means improved life for coatings and less maintenance. Multiple trials in different environments have shown 3-4 times greater life-span for Accoya® coated wood products.
