Accoya® has properties that match or exceed those of the best tropical hardwoods and treated woods, but is produced using wood from sustainable sources. Developed through decades of research that brought together an established, extensively proven wood modification technique with cutting edge patented technology (acetylation) to create a high performance wood, ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications.

Already the material of choice for a wide range of outdoor applications, Accoya® wood can be used for virtually anything from windows and doors, to decking and cladding, bridges and boats. Accoya® wood is an ideal material for the manufacture of real wood windows, doors, staircases, mouldings, kitchens, furniture, conservatories, orangeries, garden rooms and pool houses.

Accoya® wood is the material of choice to manufacture window frames. Not only does it have extremely low thermal conductivity but it equals or betters the durability and dimensional stability of the best hardwoods. It can be opaque coated or translucent coated for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood. Accoya®’s low maintenance requirements make it a cost effective and environmentally friendly material.

Exterior doors and shutters need to be be durable, dimensionally stable (to prevent doors jamming and becoming difficult to open and close in bad weather) and easy to maintain. Accoya® wood meets these criteria and can be used to create contemporary and traditional joinery products to simple and complex designs with a choice of coating finishes available for greatly improved longevity.

The Acetylation Process

Accoya® wood is modified right through to its core while the acetylation process does not weaken the original wood – in fact, its hardness is improved. Neither does the process compromise its bending strength. Combined with exceptional durability and stability Accoya® wood can be an ideal material for structural requirements and has been used in bridges and other large structures around the world.

Coatings and Finishes

Accoya® can be coated in the same way as any other wood, using transparent, translucent or opaque coatings. Impregnating oils and other finishes can also be used. Accoya®’s exceptional dimensional stability, reduces swelling stress on coatings, and UV resistance means improved life for coatings and less maintenance. Multiple trials in different environments have shown 3-4 times greater life-span with many types of coatings.
